Project Type: Upgrade of habitats  Area (in sqm): N/A
Location: Phoenix Park, Dublin 7  Completion: 2001

KMD Architecture was appointed to improve the Orang-Utan Habitat, the Polar Bear Habitat, the Wolves' Enclosure and the Tigers' Enclosure.

The main changes to the Orang-Utan Habitat were external and involved significantly extending the roaming and play area with a new "island".

The new Polar Bear Habitat is substantially larger and in a different location. It includes "the ice house" - a semi-underground structure, a larger bathing area - adjacent to a larger rocky promontory from where the bears can dive into the water. The steeply sloping site is surrounded on all four slides by pedestrian walkways, but views into the enclosure are confined to particular vantage points.
